Meet Joe Murphy, JD, CCEP

... an internationally recognized thought leader in corporate compliance and ethics. Joe co-authored the first book in the field.

Trailblazer in Corporate Compliance & Ethics

Attorney Joe Murphy has 40 years of experience in the field of organizational compliance and ethics, and was the co-author of the first book on the field of compliance and ethics. 


Now retired, Joe practiced law for his own firm in the compliance and ethics field and co-founded the Integrity Interactive Corporation (now part of SAI Global). He also worked as the attorney for Bell Atlantic’s worldwide corporate compliance program. Joe still provides lectures for many professional organizations including the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE). His most recent book, 501 Ideas for your Compliance and Ethics Program, was published by SCCE.


Joe has traveled extensively, and has done compliance work on six continents, but he’s still very active in his hometown of Haddonfield, New Jersey. A former “Citizen of the Year,” Joe founded the nonprofits Dance Haddonfield and the Friends of the Indian King Tavern Museum. He has also served as an officer and board member in various organizations in his town.

For over 40 years, Joe Murphy, JD, CCEP, has been a tireless champion of compliance and ethics in organizations and has done work in this field on six continents. Joe has published over 100 articles and given over 200 presentations in 21 countries.  


Joe is author of 501 Ideas for Your Compliance & Ethics Program and A Compliance & Ethics Program on a Dollar a Day. 


He is a Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) and was previously a member of the board of the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics. Joe was named one of The National Law Journal’s 50 Governance, Risk and Compliance Trailblazers and Pioneers 2014.


Joe is co-founder and editor of the newsletter, Compliance and Ethics: Ideas & Answers, with Adam Balfour, Jeff Kaplan and Rebecca Walker.

A renowned expert in his field, Joe is an established author and lecturer who travels the world helping compliance and ethics professionals steer their companies and other organizations along the straight and narrow path.


Practicing for twenty years in-house, and over twenty years as an outside advisor in the field of organizational compliance and ethics, Joe can travel throughout the world and be welcomed on a first name basis among the champions of compliance everywhere.


Joe has advised governments, companies, non-governmental organizations and universities around the world about the nuances of implementing an effective compliance and ethics program. Compliance techniques that he wrote about as early as the 1980s are now accepted best practices.


Joe is an international proponent of the compliance and ethics field, one of the few careers left where, as he puts it, “you can do well and do good at the same time.”

Community Work

Working with Others to Enrich the Community

Joe Murphy believes in helping out those in his neighborhood and has made a difference in his hometown of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Through his financial support and hands-on volunteering in projects both big and small, Joe has encouraged and inspired others. 


In 2010, Joe was named “Haddonfield Citizen of Year,” which came with the honor of his being honorary grand marshal of Haddonfield’s annual Independence Day parade. In 2017 he received the Alfred Driscoll Award from the Haddonfield Civic Association for outstanding service in the Borough of Haddonfield.


On most Sunday nights, when he’s not globetrotting, you can catch Joe in the ballroom at Dance Haddonfield at Grace Church.
